more economically developed countries generally have higher life expectancies than less developed regions;
exceptions: Saudi Arabia has GNP per capita but low life expectancy;
China and Cuba have low GNP per capita but have reasonably high life expectancies.
Andorra and San Marino along with Japan have the world's highest life expectancies (83.5, 81.1 and 80.7, respectively)
Africa is home to the world's lowest life expectancies: Zambia (37.2 years), Mozambique (37.5 years) and Malawi (37.6 years)
Worldwide life expectancy for all people = 63 years
For males = 61 years;
For females = 65 years.
Male-female difference is 4-6 years in North America and Europe, 14 years in Russia.
The reasons for this gender difference in life expectancy are not fully understood.

Historic

During the Roman Empire, Romans had a approximate life expectancy of 22 to 25 years.
In 1900, the world life expectancy was approximately 30 years
In 1985 life expectancy was about 62 years, just one year short of today's life expectancy.

Aging

Life expectancy changes with age. If you survive your first year of life, your probability of living longer increases;
although the life expectancy from birth for all people in the United States is 77.1 years, those who live to age 65 will have an average of 17.7 years left to live, making their life expectancy almost 83 years.
