1/8 physicians will become dependent on alcohol or other
drugs. This is a somewhat higher rate of dependence and addiction
than that of the general population (which is about 13-15%).
According to Talbott, a person's primary basic fear (besides
death) is that of losing control, and physicians as a group don't do
well when their control is threatened or questioned.
The primary fear of someone in active addiction is that of having
the drug taken away.
Physicians as a group tend to have very high recovery rates,
in some programs greater than 90%.
