The Impaired Physician

1/8 physicians will become dependent on alcohol or other drugs.  This is a somewhat higher rate of dependence and addiction than that of the general population (which is about 13-15%).
According to Talbott, a person's primary basic fear (besides death) is that of losing control, and physicians as a group don't do well when their control is threatened or questioned.
The primary fear of someone in active addiction is that of having the drug taken away.
Physicians as a group tend to have very high recovery rates, in some programs greater than 90%.
